Jefferson, North Carolina is the county seat of Ashe County and it is the center of government for the county. Located just north of its sister city, West Jefferson, Jefferson is situated along Hwy 88, near the Ashe County Airport. The lands north of Mount Jefferson State Park are considered part of Jefferson. As one of the oldest, and more established cities in Western North Carolina, Jefferson served as the area’s center of government for many decades. The courthouse in Jefferson was built in 1904 – about one hundred years after the city was chartered, in 1803 – and remains one of the most historic buildings in the town. A great place to live and own mountain real estate, Jefferson is a location that many new families settle upon as a place to begin their lives. With excellent school and healthcare options and affordable mountain lots in some of the newest communities, this little town is quickly becoming one of the best places to buy a home in Ashe County.
