The New River flows for more than 26 miles through Ashe County and is considered an American Heritage River throughout. The river’s flow in Ashe County goes by the towns of Todd, Fleetwood, Lansing and other areas, and creates mountain brooks and creeks that are filled with wild mountain trout. The river itself is calm and easily waded, making it a trout fishing paradise during most months in the year. The New River State Park, which is located all along the river in Ashe County and parts of Alleghany County, is one of the nation’s top fishing destinations. You can cast your line here and fish for tonight’s dinner when you own New River Homes and New River Cabins on this majestic mountain river.
Tubing, Canoeing & Biking
The New River’s waters are calm and perfect for canoeing and lazy tubing. In the summer months, residents and visitors from all over flock to the river to beat the heat and enjoy the river’s slow stream. There are several rafting guide companies in the area that offer canoe trips and equipment for those looking to get out on the river. If you don’t want to get wet, you can enjoy the New River by biking right next to it on Railroad Grade Road, a popular, flat biking road that follows the course of the river by the towns of Fleetwood and Todd. Oftentimes the water is so clear that you can look down while peddling and see brown mountain trout and rainbow trout swimming through the currents.
New River Festival in Todd
Every year in October, the sleepy little community of Todd, which lies right next to the banks of the river, celebrates the ancient river by hosting the Todd New River Festival. Community members mix and mingle with vacationers and enjoy live entertainment, great food, and tons of Appalachian mountain crafts while honoring the beauty and history of the New River in North Carolina.
