Appalachian State University is a public four-year educational institution located right in downtown Boone. The school was founded in 1899 as Watauga Academy and enrolled fewer than one hundred students in three grades. A few years later in 1903, after the school’s founder had helped pass legislation by the state to receive funds to train teachers, the school changed its name to Appalachian State Teachers College and enrolled a few hundred teachers in training. Over time the school grew, as did its campus, and today Appalachian State University is a driving force in the economy and development of the area.
Offering numerous degrees in various fields of study, Appalachian State continues to grow and thrive. Students from all over the country and various places in the world come to the school to get a unique, liberal arts education and earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The school also awards one PH.D. degree in Educational Leadership, and most certainly has plans in the future to expand its degree offerings. While many teachers are still trained at the school, Appalachian turns out a host of other types of majors, including many accounting degrees, social work majors and degrees in the athletic sciences.
The campus and the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the school are a small part of why the school is so successful. All around Appalachian State University you can see the amazing beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and take advantage of the excellent climate by getting outside and taking part in your favorite outdoor hobbies. A large part of the downtown region of Boone intersects with the school’s campus and the more than 15,871 students that are enrolled at the school live in and around the campus. The school has several dormitories for underclassmen and there are numerous condos, apartments and other student complexes throughout the area.
