The age of the New River is not the only unique thing about this magnificent tributary of the Kanawha that flows through regions of Ashe County and Alleghany County. It forms at the confluence of the South Fork of the New River and the North Fork of the New River in Ashe County. It follows a northern pattern into southwestern Virginia where it passes through the Iron Mountain near Galax. This south to north course that the New River follows is against the topography of the Appalachian Mountains, which is generally southwest to northeast. Most other major rivers in the area near Virginia and North Carolina flow in a distinct west to east pattern. It is this peculiar flow that many geologists site as another piece of proof that shows that the river precedes the formation of the Appalachian Mountains it flows through. This is widely contested and often a hot debate. Whether you think the New River in North Carolina is ancient or not, it is very much considered a wonderful natural commodity to be respected, preserved, and loved. It flows for 26 miles in Ashe County and is considered an American Heritage River and a National Wild and Scenic River by federal government entities. You can fish, swim, canoe, tube, and camp all along the New River in Ashe and Alleghany County.
Much of the New River flows through farmlands near Fleetwood and Todd and feeds mountain streams and brooks that you will find throughout the region. There are many great Log Cabins on the New River and homes for sale in this area. These are perfect for creating your very own retreat. Part of the New River flows through New River State Park in both counties and this 2,200-acre preserved area is covered by second growth and old growth forests. You can see wildflowers on the river’s bank and watch as beavers, deer, raccoons, and a variety of native birds frolic all about the landscapes. Check out my listings of North Carolina Mountain Property for sale and other listings along the New River. There are many great up-and-coming gated communities and developments along the river that have tons of affordable land for sale.
